The theme of this Wari-Kougai is Gourd with String. The gourd was an annual plant. The ripe fruit was scooped out from the gourd. The gourd was then used as a container to hold water or sake. This Wari-Kogai is an unusual type since it is not split down the center. It splits under the Jiita on the other side. The reason for the odd split may have been done to maintain the shape of the design of the gourd and string. It is Mumei, but has been attributed to the Ko-kinko Tradition. A very unique Wari-Kogai. It has passed the Hozon Shinsa in 2019. |
