Motoyuki[本行] was born in 1642 as the son of Bungo Takada swordsmith Naoyuki[尚行]. He claimed to be a descendant of Bungo Yukihira[豊後行平], a master craftsman from the early Kamakura period, and moved to Karatsu, Hizen, around the time he received the title of Kawachi Daijo[河内大掾] in 1677. In 1693 he went to Edo to study under Tsunahiro[綱廣] from Soshu, and given the character "hon[本]" from the Honami family and changed his name to "Motoyuki." After returning home, he carved inscriptions such as "Bungo Taro Motoyuki[豊後太郎本行]" in Karatsu. In his later years, he was nicknamed "Matsuba Hongyo[松葉本行]" as the "moto[本]" in his name was cut in the shape of a pine needle. He died around the end of the Kyoho period (1730). This work is a rare double-ridged large spear by Matsuba Motoyuki. Ayasugi-hada is visible, giving it an old style. It has passed the Hozon Token shinsa in 2024. |
