Other Info
Fujiwara Sadatoshi was a swordsmith of the late Edo period. He first forged swords in Shirakawa, Mutsu Province, and was later appointed as a swordsmith of the Mito Domain under Tokugawa Nariaki, where he worked at the Shirahatayama Weapons Workshop. In his later years, he moved from Mito to Wakuya and subsequently to Shiroishi in Mutsu Province. He used the art names Seishinshi and Ichiryusai, and occasionally signed his name as "Sadatoshi" (定俊) instead of "Sadatoshi" (貞俊). His known signatures include "Oshu Shirakawa-ju Ichiryusai Sadatoshi" and "Suifu-shin Ichiryusai Sadatoshi."As stated in the accompanying NBTHK Hozon Token certificate, this wakizashi was forged around the Keio era (1865–1868), after the smith had moved from Mito to Mutsu Province. The blade displays masame-hada throughout, while the hamon is a gunome-midare incorporating pointed gunome, demonstrating the smith's high level of craftsmanship. The bo-hi grooves on both sides are carved through into the tang and were cut before quenching (uchi-bi). This is a refined hira-zukuri small wakizashi (ko-wakizashi) of excellent workmanship. It has passed the NBTHK Hozon Token shinsa in 2014.
