| This work, signed with the two-character mei “Kunikane,” is by Yamashiro no Kami Kunikane (2nd generation). He was the eldest son of the first-generation Yamashiro Daijō Kunikane, born in Keichō 17 (1612). He succeeded to the second generation in Shōhō 2 (1645) at the age of 34, received the title of Yamashiro no Kami in Kanbun 7 (1667), and passed away in Kanbun 12 (1672) at the age of 61.The workmanship of the jihada and hamon closely resembles that of the first generation, and his skill approaches that of his father, who is ranked among the highest-level swordsmiths. Accordingly, he is regarded as a highly accomplished smith of superior quality. While showing a beautiful masame hada, this blade is unusual in that, instead of the typical Yamato-style suguha, it features a chōji-midare with thick nie, making it a rare example. It is an outstanding work that clearly demonstrates his high level of skill. This blade passed the NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Token shinsa in 2000. |
