Other Info
This wakizashi is a sword crafted by Lord Nariaki (1800-1860), the ninth feudal lord of the Mito Tokugawa clan (posthumous title: Lord Rekko). It was the 佩刀 (sword worn at the waist) of Lord Katsuaki Itakura (1809-1857), the seventh lord of the Annaka domain in Kōzuke Province, who was a close friend of Lord Nariaki. (Tokubetsu Hozon Token). It comes with a wakizashi koshirae (Tokubetsu Hozon Toso) featuring a kin-nashiji gold lacquer surface with blue shell scattered grain pattern saya. Tokugawa Nariaki (Lord Rekko) was born in 1800 as the third son of Mito's seventh domain lord, Harutosi. In 1829 (Bunsei 12), his eldest brother, the eighth domain lord Narinobu, passed away, and he became the ninth domain lord. He devoted himself to the ways of literature and martial arts, establishing the Kodo-kan, constructing a reverberatory furnace, and founding the Shirahata-yama Weapons Factory, among other achievements. “Retsu-ko” is his posthumous name (a name bestowed upon a noble after death). Around 1824 (Tenpō 5), he tried to forge swords. Initially, Ichige Tokurin and Naoe Sukemasa served as his forging partners, but after both swordsmiths died in succession, Naoe Suketomo and Katsumura Tokukatsu took their places. Lord Rekko's swords bear only the pattern traditionally known in Mito as “Aoi Kuzushi” (unusual hollyhock crest). This features a clock motif, resembling a simplified clock face, carved above the mekugi-ana hole. This wakizashi is said to have been presented by Lord Rekko to Lord Katsuaki Itakura, the seventh lord of the Annaka domain in Joshu, with whom he had a close friendship. It is said Lord Katsuaki used it as his own sword (the applicant for the registration certificate was a descendant of Lord Itakura).
