Judging from the mei, this wakizashi was made by the Yukihiro[行廣] first generation. The first Yukihiro was Yoshinobu's[吉信] second son and the grandson of the Tadayoshi[忠吉] first generation. He was the younger brother of the first Masahiro[正廣] as weill. In 1648, he received the title of Dewa Daijo. In 1663, he was transferred to Dewa no Kami. In 1650, he went to Nagasaki, where he learned the forging method of Dutch from blacksmiths Hisatsugu and Yakushiji Tanenaga, and then inscribed the soe-mei/ additional inscription "Forging methods introduced from Oranda/the Netherlands[以阿蘭陀鍛]". He later learned the forging method of Bizen Ichimonji[一文字] Tradition from the Ishido school swordsmith (Shirobei Norikichi), and added the inscription "ichi[一]" to indicate this. He passed away in 1683 at the age of 66. This sword is one of the masterpieces by the first Yukihiro. It has passed the Tokubetsu Hozon Token shinsa in 1987. |
