Other Info
Rashōmon is a legend associated with the Rashōmon gate in Heian-period Kyoto. It tells the story of the brave warrior Watanabe no Tsunemasa, who went to slay the demon appearing night after night at Rashōmon and severed one of its arms with his sword. This work depicts the scene where he attempts to cut off the demon's arm at Rashōmon. Amid swirling clouds and howling winds, the armored warrior Watanabe no Tsunemasa grasps the demon's revealed arm, his hand on the hilt of his sword. A truly compelling masterpiece. The artist, Yoshiyuki, was a member of the Hiyama school. Originally from Mito, he first studied under Tamagawa Miku, later becoming a disciple of Hamano Noriyuki. His artistic name was Taryūsai. Resided in Fukagawa, Edo. This tsuba is featured in the book of“Hagane to Irogane: Swords and Sword Fittings of Ibaraki prefecture.” It passed the Tokubetsu Hozon Tosogu shinsa held in the August 2025.
