| The tsuba depicts partial carriage wheels and wave pattern. Some Genji cart wheel hidden beneath waves. It is said to be a stylized representation of how aristocrats in the Heian period would remove the wheels from their ox-drawn carts and immerse them in the flowing waters of Kyoto's Kamo River to prevent excessive drying. This tsuba features the partial single-wheel motif set against a iron ground pattern of waves. The rim is gilded with gold foil, giving it a substantial weight. |
