Matsui Sadahide was born in Akita, he moved to Edo during the Bunsei era (1818-1830) and became a disciple of Suishinshi Masahide[水心子正秀], taking the go-name Tesshinsai[鉄心斎]. In 1838, he went to Takada in Echigo province and became a Takada domain craftsman employed by Sakakibara Shikibu Daifu[榊原式部大輔]. This sword was custom-made at the request of Sudo Yoshichika, a high-ranking samurai of the Takada domain, to celebrate his longevity. It comes with an elegant Aikuchi-tanto style Koshirae/mounting with wrapped aisame/shark skin saya/ scabbard and a white ray skin wrapped dashimenuki style tuska/handle.
