Kato Tsunahide [加藤綱英] was the eldest son of Kato Kunihide [加藤国秀] from Dewa, and the older brother of Chounsai Tsunatoshi [長運斎綱俊]. He first studied under Suzuki Harukuni, the 6th head of Hokuso Harukuni [北窓治国], and then left for Edo around 1807 to study under Suishinshi Masahide [水心子正秀]. The Edo-uchi swords remain dating from 1808 to 1816. This Naginata was made in 1815. He was a official swordsmith of the Yonezawa domain. One of his disciple was Koyama Munetsugu [固山宗次]. His style, like this sword, is dense jigane with fine itame grain and lots of ji-nie, and the blade has a Oh-gunome midare hamon in the style of Toran. It has passed the Tokubetsu Hozon Token shinsa in 2019. |
