Guan Yu and Zhang Fei were Shu military commanders active during the Three Kingdoms period in China. Both were loyal vassals who served Liu Bei, the first emperor of Shu. Guan Yu was known for his extraordinary bravery and sense of duty, while Zhang Fei was known for his extraordinary courage. The three are known to have sworn to be sworn brothers in the "Oath of the Peach Garden." This set of menuki depicts Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, which may be a mask of play. |
