The theme of this kozuka is Nio Guardian. The Nio Guardian are usually depicted as two wrathful and muscular guardians of the Buddha standing at the entrance of many Buddhist temples in East Asian Buddhism. According to Japanese tradition, they traveled with Gautama Buddha to protect him. They are seen as protectors of the Gates of the temples keeping evil spirits out. |
