At the end of the Muromachi Period, Portuguese and Spanish visited Japan. They came to teach Christianity. One of the things they brought from overseas were often unusual and interesting. They were different from the Japanese crafted items. This Kozuka depicts a Western person and a Western dog. It is Mumei but has been attributed to the Goto Tradition crafted during the Momoyama Period. A very nice and high quality item made from Shakudo and gold. It has passed the Hozon Tosogu Shinsa in 2002. |
