Dagon is a symbol of authority, and Tiger is a symbol of bravery. The dragon and tiger theme are expression that liken the two heroes and heroes of equal strength. They have been depicted since ancient times as designs to show off power in scenes of fierce battles between strong people. This koshirae is a wakizashi mounting with a black lacquered saya ornamented a dragon and tiger theme fitteings. The mei on the fuchi, Hirokatsu[弘勝], was a disciple of Uchikoshi Toshi[打越 弘寿] and his go[号]/pseudonym was Jogensai[如元斎]. He lived in Mito, Hitachi Province, during the late Edo period. The kao signatures on the tsuba, kozuka, and kogai are thought to be Hirokatsu's another kao[花押] signatures, judging from workmanship, but we look forward to further investigation. It has passed the TokbetsuH zo Toso shinsa in August 2024. |
