Other Info
Enju Nobutsugu, whose real name was Tanigawa Hiromitsu, was born in 1948 and lived in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture. He was the eldest son of Mukansa swordsmith Tanigawa Moriyoshi and studied swordmaking under his father. Nobutsugu received numerous awards at the Shinsaku Meitō-ten, including the Kanzan Prize, Kunzan Prize, and Excellence Awards. Regarded as a highly promising swordsmith, he sadly passed away at the young age of 50 in 1998. This blade was forged in 1988, when Nobutsugu was 40 years old and at the height of his maturity as a swordsmith. It has a broad mihaba and a somewhat extended kissaki, giving the blade a dignified and powerful appearance. The wide and highly varied hamon is exceptionally lively, with frequent kinsuji running dynamically through the hardened edge. The work was likely created with the style of Kiyomaro in mind. Nobutsugu’s considerable skill is fully displayed in the vigorous and spirited hamon, making this an accomplished and powerful work.
