| Ishidō Unju Korekazu was the son of Chōunsai Tsunatoshi (long believed to be his nephew; however, documents of the Ishidō Korekazu family later proved that he was in fact Tsunatoshi’s second son). He was born in Bunsei 3 (1820).In Tenpō 12 (1841), having no heir, the sixth-generation shogunal swordsmith Ishidō Korekazu adopted him. He then took the art name Unjusai and succeeded as the seventh head of the Ishidō school. He died in Meiji 24 (1891) at the age of 71.As a shogunate-appointed swordsmith, Unju Korekazu forged presentation swords dedicated to the Ise Grand Shrine and Nikkō Tōshō-gū, as well as diplomatic gift swords presented to the United States in Kaei 7 (1854) and to Great Britain in Ansei 6 (1859). He is regarded as one of the foremost master swordsmiths of the late Edo period. This sword bears an ownership inscription stating that it was worn by Shiraishi Tokitoshi of the Seiwa Genji lineage. A notably long blade measuring 2 shaku 8 sun, it was forged in Ansei 5 (1858), when Korekazu was 38 years old, and represents a powerful and fully realized masterpiece. The sword passed the Tokubetsu Hozon Tōken (Special Preservation Sword) shinsa in 2002. |
