Other Info
This blade is an oh-suriage mumei, attributed to Uda Kunifusa [宇多国房], a master swordsmith representing the Uda school of Etchū Province. The Uda school said to be founded by Ko-nyūdō Kunimitsu [古入道国光] who relocated from Uda District in Yamato Province to Uda in Etchū Province (present-day Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture) during the late Kamakura period. Beyond Kunimitsu's sons Kunifusa [国房] and Kunimune [国宗], numerous swordsmiths bearing the character “Kuni [国]” in their names continued the lineage through generations, reaching its peak during the Muromachi period and persisting into the Edo period. Attributed to Uda Kunifusa, this is an excellent example bearing the characteristics of the Uda school from the late Nanboku-chō period to the early Muromachi period (around the Ōei era). Despite its Ohsuriage, it possesses a deep curvature and beautiful form, with two so called homare-kizu on the mune. The jigane shows itame with mokume pattern mixed in, accompanied by jinie and Chikei. The hamon is a straight pattern with thick nie. The sunagashi, kinsen and nijyu-ba within the hamon show excellent workmanship, exuding the dignity of a renowned sword. Passed the Tokubetsu Hozon Token shinsa in 2025.
