| The Bizen Osafune Yokoyama [横山] school is a Sukesada [祐定] lineage swordsmith group from the Shin-Shin-tō period. Its members—Sukenaga [祐永], Sukekane [祐包], Suketaka [祐高], Sukenao [祐直], Sukehira [祐平], and others—all used “Suke [祐]” as their common character. Their style is the Bizen tradition featured as nioi-deki (type of hamon). They cut long mei signatures with large, bold chiseling. Although the detais of this swordsmith, Yokoyama Sukehiro [祐廣], are not yet clear, the ura-mei inscription “February, Keiō 3 [1867] / Tomonari [友成], 59th Generation Descendant” and the style suggest it was made by a disciple of the first Sukekane (58th generation descendant of Tomonari). “Hayase Gennosuke Gen Masakatsu” is likely his real name. This is a magnificent and rare example bearing the signature of Yokoyama Sukehiro. It has passed the Hozon Token shinsa in 2024. It comes with a koshirae with a black ishimeji lacquered saya. |
