Swordsmith Hiromasa [博正] from Hojo, Yoshu was born in Hojo City, Ehime Prefecture, and his real name was Toriu Kumataro Munehiro [鳥生熊太郎宗広]. He was a student of Takahashi Yoshimune [高橋義宗] (the elder brother of Living National Treasure Takahashi Sadatsugu [高橋義貞], a famous swordsmith but died young). He was a swordsmith commissioned by the army and forged swords at the Toriu Military Sword Forge. He passed away in 1953. This work was made in February 1944, a year and a half before the end of the war, and is one of masterpieces by swordsmith Hiromasa, whose high level of skill can be seen in the careful nakago making and the beautiful downwards choji-midare pattern. |
