Other Info
In Bungo Province, Sadahide[定秀] appeared at the end of the Heian period, Yukihira[行平] at the beginning of the Kamakura period, and Tomoyuki[友行] during the Nanbokucho period. These schools continued and at the end of the Muromachi period, the group of swordsmiths called "Taira Takada" flourished. Even in the Edo period, they were called "Fujiwara Takada" because they engraved the name Fujiwara[藤原] added on the nakago as signature. Around the Kanbun and Enpo eras, they became so popular that they surpassed Hizen swords and continued to do so until the end of the Edo period. The first Munekage[統景] was around the Keicho, early Edo period. The first Munekage was the last master craftsman of the Taira Takada school, who was given the character "Mune" by Otomo Yoshimune[大友義宗], the governor of Bungo Province, and changed the name to Munekage. The second generation followed around the Shoho era and after generations continued. This katana is thought to be by the second Genemon Munekage[源右衛門宗統景] based on the features. Its high-tempered, undulating gunome-choji midare hamon pattern is attractive. It comes with a uchigatana syle Koshirae/mounting with a black lacquer saya. It has passed the Hozon Token shinsa in 2024.
