Other Info
Muneaki[宗明] was a swordsmith from Mutsu Province (Rikuchu Province) from the end of the Edo period to the early Meiji period, and engraved with inscriptions such as "Minamoto Muneaki, a retainer of Ichinoseki[一関士源宗明]" and "Made by Kubota Muneaki from Ichinoseki, Rikuchu[陸中一関住久保田宗明作]". He was born in 1831 as the eldest son of Kubota Ryozo, an official swordsmith in Ichinoseki, and left for Edo to become a disciple of Koyama Munetsugu[固山宗次]. In 1857 he returned to Ichinoseki and worked as the official swordsmith for the Tamura family, lords of Ichinoseki domain. He passed away at the age of 58 in 1895. This katana was made by Muneaki when he was 31 years old. It is a beautiful sword with a finely koitame jigane and a fragrant choji-midare hamon pattern, resembled his teacher Koyama Munetsugu. The orderer, Fujiwara Shigenao[藤原擧直], was probably Tsuchiya Shigenao[土屋擧直], the 11th lord of the Tsuchiura Domain, descended from the Fujiwara clan. It comes with a custom-made Japanese Army Type 98 military sword mounting with in excellent condition. It has passed the Tokubetsu Hozon Token shinsa in September 2024.
