Hosokawa Masayoshi[細川正義] is a master swordsmith same as Shoji Taikei Naotane[庄司大慶直胤] as the representative disciple of the master Suishinshi Masahide[水心子正秀] during the Shin-shinto period. He was born in Kanuma, Shimotsuke Province in 1786 as the eldest son of Ryosuke Masayoshi (the first). He learned the sword smithing from his father at an early age, and began making swords at the age of 16. In 1805, he studied under Suishinshi Masahide with his father, and mastered the Soshu-den and Bizen-den tradition. His first signature was "Masakata[正方]", and later "Morihide[守秀]". In 1813, he moved to Edo. In 1817, he became the retainer of Matsudaira Echizen-no-kami of Tsuyama Domain in Mimasaka Province. In 1819, he changed his signature from Morihide to Masayoshi, and succeeded Masayoshi (the second). In 1841, at the age of 56, he was ordered by the domain to move to the daimyo's suburban residence of the Tsuyama Domain in Fukagawa, Edo. He died at the age of 73 in 1858. This work was made at the age of over 70, a characteristic katana from his later years. It has passed the Tokubetsu Hozon shinsa in 1991. |
