During the Nambokucho and Muromachi Period in Bingo Province, Hokke was another name for the Ichijo school, also known as Hokke-mihara. Its name came from the fact that Ichijo, a son of the second Masaie of the Mihara Tradition, became a Buddhist monk of the Hokke/Nichiren sect. The inscription on the sword, dated 1368, reads "Made by Ichijo, a priest of the Nichiren sect from Onomichi, Bingo Province." The sword's style is shallower in curvature than that of the Mihara swords, with a thick kasane and a rugged appearance. This katana is an O-suriage mumei but has been attributed to the Hokke Tradition made in Nambokucho period and passed the Tokubetsu Hozon shinsa in 2024. |
