This swordsmith, Oku Motohira was born in 1744 as the older son of Motonao. In 1777 he inherited the household from his father. In 1785, he became an official swordsmith of the Satsuma Clan. In 1789, he received the title of "Yamato No Kami" at the age of 46. He passed away in 1826 at the age of 83. There were many famous swordsmiths who visited him and became his students; such as Sumi Motooki from Aizu; Yokoyama Sukehira, from Osafune, Bizen; and Aoki Motonaga, from Owari. This swordsmith, Oku Motohira, was a representative of the Satsuma Swordsmiths during the Shin-Shinto Era. This Katana was forged in 1804 when Motohira was 60 years old, a matured age. This blade shows Motohira features well. A marvelous Katana. It is referred to a book of 'Shin-shinto Taikan' and 'Token-yoran' by Iimura Kasho as well as 'Shinshintoshu Hamon to Meiji' by Fujishiro Yoshio. It has passed the Tokubetsu Hozon Token in 1996. |
