Other Info
This is an Ōmi-yari of hira-sankaku form. Ōmi-yari became popular during the late Muromachi period, when Sengoku warriors competed for the honor of claiming the first spear (ichiban-yari) in battle and favored this type of imposing spear. The kerakubi is pentagonal in cross-section. The hamon on the hira-ji is a bright gunome-midare mixed with pointed gunome, predominantly nioi-based with fine ko-nie, and a narrow bohi runs along the center of the hira-ji. Well balanced in proportion, the spear possesses the powerful appearance characteristic of a yari.Kaneie belonged to the San'ami branch of the Sue-Seki school, which continued through several generations. Judging from the style of the signature, this work is most likely by the Tenshō-era Kaneie, who was active during the Eiroku–Tenshō period (1558–1592) of the late Muromachi period. He is said to have served the Takeda clan, later moving to Shinano Province, and is also believed to be the same smith who signed with the name Nobuie. This yari has passed the NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Token shinsa in 2026.
