This swordsmith, Kikuchi Toyosaburo Chikatomo [菊池豊三郎近知], was born in Mito in 1815. His teacher Kawamura Kanzaburo [川村勘三郎], who called himself Bando Taro Bokuden V [五代坂東太郎卜伝] (a new name for Musashinokami Yoshikado of Seki Zenjoke in Noshu [濃州関善定家武蔵守吉門], who became a Mito clan oficial swordsmith), had no sons, so Chikatomo was adopted and changed his name to Zenjoke Chikanori [善定家近則]. This wakizashi was made in 1841, before he changed his name to Chikanori, when he was 24 years old. Chikachi became a disciple of Taikei Naotane [Taikei Naotane] when he was stationed at Hitachi Sukegawa Castle, and also went to Edo to study under Naotane. Naotane visited three times in 1839, 1851, and 1855, so this sword is thought to have been made under Naotane's first visit. This is a Hirazukuri sunnobi-tanto and a beautiful koitame masa-nagare jigane, and a Notare-hamon with kinsen. It has passed the Tokubetsu Hozon Token shinsa in December 2024. |
