This wakizashi, "Motooki, retainer of Aizu [会津臣元興]", was forged by the second Motooki, Sumi Daisuke Shoken Motooki [角大助松軒元興]. Shoken Motooki was born in 1817. He was the grand son of the first Motooki, Sumi Daihachi Motooki [角大八], who was a disciple of Suishinshi Masahide [水心子正秀] . As his father died in 1819, five years before the death of the first Motooki, Daisuke took on the leanage, name Motooki and learning swordsmithing techniques from Nakajo Michitoki [中条道辰] 4th generation. Later, in 1859, he studied swordsmithing under Ishido Unju Korekazu [石堂運寿是一] in Edo. In August of the same year, he became a monk and took the name "Shoken [松軒]". He was one of the great swordsmiths in Aizu of the late Edo period. He passed away in 1891 at the age of 80. This wakizashi is a beautiful wakizashi by Shoken Motooki, who was at the age of 31. It has passed the Tokubetsu Hozon Token shinsa in 2024. |
