| This refined tsuba depicts omodaka (arrowhead plants), skillfully combining openwork and sunken relief carving to express the design in in-yo (positive and negative forms). The maker, Tatsunao of the Ido family, was the son of Tatsutoshi. He signed his works “Tatsunao, resident of Efu” and specialized in iron tsuba with stylized designs of plants and grasses rendered in openwork. Together with his father Tatsutoshi, he established the distinctive style of the Ido school. Tatsunao lived in Honjo, Edo, and was active in the late Edo period. |
