| The Wachigai (Overlapping Circles) motif is a general term for a geometric design composed of two or more overlapping circles. Admired for the beauty of its form and for the way the design interconnects and expands continuously, it was favored as an auspicious motif. Fine tsuba with Wachigai designs in openwork were produced in various regions throughout Japan. This tsuba is signed “Yoshiharu saku.” Based on the style of the signature and the workmanship, it was probably made by Yoshiharu of Hagi in Choshu, who worked during the late Edo period. |
