| This tsuba depicts the landscape of a Japanese castle, featuring sturdy stone walls crowned with ancient pine trees. The stone walls and pines are brilliantly rendered in gold nunome-zōgan on an iron ground, while powerful waves carved in nikubori are complemented by auspicious clouds rendered in openwork, creating a striking contrast between movement and tranquility. A shakudō fukurin surrounds the rim, enhancing the elegance of the composition, while the delicate yet brilliant gold nunome-zōgan harmonizes beautifully with the robust iron plate. Judging from its refined design, in which decorative gold nunome-zōgan plays the principal role and is skillfully combined with waves and auspicious clouds, this tsuba is considered to be the work of the Kaga School of the late Edo period. |
