Other Info
Shippo-tsunagi is a traditional geometric pattern formed by overlapping circles of equal size by one quarter, creating an endless connected design. Because the circles (en, also meaning “relationships” or “connections”) continue without interruption, the pattern has long been regarded as an auspicious motif symbolizing harmony, good fortune, and enduring relationships.Tsuba with shippo-tsunagi sukashi openwork such as this example were produced by highly skilled metalworkers including the Bushū Itō school, who were known for their precise carving techniques. From the finely forged iron and the dignified quality of workmanship, this piece most likely represents the work of Masatsune, one of the representative masters of the mid-Edo period Bushū Itō school.
