This tsuba is an openwork piece with a noshi motif.Noshi are decorative elements symbolizing celebration and good fortune, originally derived from noshi-awabi (thinly stretched and dried abalone). The design combines elegance and formality, and this example expresses flowing noshi forms through sukidashibori and openwork on a round iron plate. The artist, Kazumori, was an Edo metalworker active in the late Edo period. This piece is signed “Buyō Shinobugaoka Kazumori (with kaō)” and is published in Kinkō Meikan by Kokubo Kenichi.“Shinobuoka” refers to the former name of the Ueno plateau, where present-day Ueno Park is located.Accompanied by an NBTHK Hozon Tosogu certificate issued in 2010.
