The oak (kashiwa) retains its old leaves through winter until new ones emerge, and is therefore regarded as a symbol of vitality and longevity, as well as an auspicious motif symbolizing the continuity and prosperity of one’s lineage.In this piece, large oak leaves are skillfully connected to the branches and trunk, forming a well-balanced composition. A variety of carving techniques are employed to depict a natural and evocative scene.Masamichi was a metalworker of the Bushū Itō school, active in the late Edo period. This tsuba demonstrates the solid workmanship and refined aesthetic characteristic of Bushū work.This piece passed the Hozon Tosogu shinsa in 1996.
