The Tomoe, Comma-shaped Figure is a motif associated with water, interpreted as swirling water. As such, tomoe crests were placed on eave tiles and other elements of houses in the late Heian period to ward off fire. Later, the tomoe figure came to be used as a divine crest at shrines. This tsuba depicts a right-facing six-tomoe with openwork. It was appraised as the Shōami school and passed the Hozon Tosogu shinsa in 2025. |
