Akita Shoami [秋田正阿弥] began with the Shoami metalworkers who accompanied Lord Satake when he was transferred from Mito in 1605 (Keicho 5). This tsuba was made by Shoami Shigehiro [正阿弥重廣]. He was active around the Genroku to Shotoku era (1688-1716). He studied under the 11th soke of the Goto school, Tsujo [通乗], in Edo, and sought to revive the Akita Shoami school, which had been producing tsuba since the Satake clan moved. This sword is inscribed "Shoami Shigehiro, resident of Akita, Dewa," and is an extra-large tsuba with an iron base exceeding 10cm in length. It has passed the Hozon Tosogu shinsa in 2015. |
