An arhat was a high priest who had reached the highest level of Buddhist training. It is said that arhat had mastered the magic of making a dragon rise from a water jug that he holds in his hand. This tsuba depicts an arhat making a dragon from a water jug, and was made in 1821(Bunsei 4). This artisan, Shosen Sai Tomotoshi[松僊斎友利] was active in Mito and a disciple of Hirano Tomomichi [平野友道]. It has passed the Hozon Tosogu shinsa in 2009. |
