Okabe Tadamasa was active during mid-Edo period in Aizu, Mutsu Province metalworker who specializes in Choshu carving. At first glance, the intricate and detailed sukidashi-bori carving on the iron base makes it look like a Choshu tsuba, but it is actually an Aizu Shoami tsuba. Go is ‘Bansuiken’. This work is a tsuba depicting a lion's cub being thrown into a valley. It is said that when a lion gives birth to a cub, it throws it into the depths of a valley and only the cub that survives is raised. According to legend, only the one with the most vitality that crawls out was raised. This tsuba shows the characteristics of Aizu Okabe Tadamasa with in a high quality. |
