Other Info
Chinese poetry was widely read from the Edo period to the early Meiji period in Japan. Many poets known as "literati" emerged from the background of Neo-Confucianism, and Rai Sanyo's poems are still widely recited as shigin (reciting poems) today. At the end of the Edo period, Shimazu Hisamitsu (the 10th lord of the Satsuma domain) and Date Muneyasu (the 9th lord of the Sendai domain) were known as masters of Chinese poetry. This tsuba depicts scenes of the patriots of the late Edo period, and has been attributed to the Mito tradition. It has passed the Hozon Tosogu shinsa in 2024.
