Other Info
The theme of this Tsuba is Chokaro, Zhang Guo Lao. The depiction of Chokaro riding a donkey is a popular theme. He was one of the hermits of the Tang Dynasty in China. He was always rode a white donkey and traveled thousands of miles in a day using illusions. When he rests, he folds his donkey and places it within a gourd, which he hangs from his waist. When he needed to ride, he would squirt water from the gourd then the donkey would appear. Judging from the features of the work, it was likely crafted by the Mito Tradition during the late Edo Period. It is well crafted Tsuba used for a Wakizashi style Koshirae.
