| The Soshu Tsunahiro line is a distinguished lineage of swordsmiths from Kamakura in Soshu, continuing from the late Muromachi period to the present day. The first generation, by order of Hojo Ujitsuna, forged a large tachi dedicated to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu in Tenbun 7 (1538), and was granted the character “Tsuna,” changing his name from Masahiro to Tsunahiro. The second generation served Tokugawa Ieyasu, and the third was invited by the Tsugaru domain of Mutsu Province during the Keicho era, working in the castle town of Hirosaki. This work is dated Bunka 12 (1815) and corresponds to the 10th generation Tsunahiro, who died in 1830. Like the 9th generation, who was a student of Suishinshi Masahide, this piece clearly reflects the style of Suishinshi Masahide. The horimono on the blade—a crawling dragon and a suken with a sanko—extend into the hamon, and from their condition it is likely that they are original carvings (ubu-hi). The inscription “at the foot of Mt. Genji in Soshu” provides an especially interesting geographical reference.Passed Tokubetsu Hozon Token shinsa in September 2025. |
