Other Info
This is a kurikata with a Tengu mask design that has received an NBTHK Hozon Tosogu certificate as an individual piece. On the lustrous polished copper ground, the expressive face of the Tengu is skillfully rendered in sukidashi-bori with a strong sense of three-dimensional form. Gold iroe is applied to the eyes, giving the Tengu an intense and commanding gaze. The design continues from the front and back onto the sides of the kurikata, making skillful use of its limited surface. The work bears only a kao, making it difficult to identify the metalworker. However, judging from the style and the use of polished copper, it is thought to be the work of a regional metalworker, possibly from Shonai or a related area. Presented in a fitted display box, it is an attractive piece for display. It passed the NBTHK Hozon Tosogu shinsa in 2018.
