| “Shōjin Mugai” means that in the pursuit of knowledge or mastery of a craft, there is no final destination, and one must continue striving throughout life. Swordsmith Fujiyasu Shōhei, based at the Shōhei forge in Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture, is one of the great modern Japanese swordsmiths who truly embodies this philosophy. Since becoming an apprentice at the age of 19 to Living National Treasure Miyairi Akihira (Yukihira), he has spent more than half a century pursuing the endless challenge of recreating the finest qualities of kotō—the great Japanese swords of the Heian and Kamakura periods, regarded as the pinnacle of swordmaking. |
