The toad (gama, i.e., the Japanese toad) is said to be unsightly in appearance yet regarded as the king of frogs. It was believed to feed on the vital essence of the mountains, and that those who consumed it could become immortals (sennin). These immortals were thought to wield the toad to summon mist, bring rain, and perform various supernatural arts, and thus the creature has long been associated with mysterious powers. In addition, because the word “kaeru” can mean both “to return (home)” and “to revive,” the motif was favored by samurai. This work is a rare example of toad-design menuki, with the hind legs thrust outward to convey a strong and powerful presence.
