The theme of this pair of menuki is a Go-san/five-three Paulownia Crest on a gold Nanako pattern surface, tsubo-kasa type menuki. It is mumei, but has been attributed to Eijyo (the 6th master of the Goto family). Eijyo was the eldest son of Tokujo (the 5th master of the family), born in 1577. He inherited the family headship in 1594. He passed away in 1613 at the age of 41. He lived in Kyoto. His works are very few of signed, and many of his works were identified by the later master of the Goto family. His style is typical of the Goto family, with an old-fashioned carving technique, large, and high relief, similar to that of the 3rd master, Joshin. This work features a five-three Paulownia Crest on a nanako pattern surface, carved with a sukidashi carving technique. It has passed the Hozon Shinsa in 2010. |
