Other Info
The wild boar, as expressed in the phrase “chototsu mōshin” (reckless charge), is a creature of great drive and courage. Its bold and fearless nature made it a favored motif among samurai, while it is also known for its sensitivity and attentiveness. In addition, as a prolific animal, it has been regarded as a symbol of prosperity and abundance. This work depicts a boar quietly at rest, yet it beautifully conveys an underlying sense of strength and ferocity. The artist, signed Eisei, cannot be identified with certainty as there are multiple craftsmen using the same name. However, judging from the sincere and disciplined signature as well as the refined quality of the nanako ground, it is appraised as the work of a skilled artisan no later than the mid-Edo period. This piece passed the Hozon Tosogu shinsa in November 2025.
