| This sword was designated as Juyo Token (Important Sword) at the 37th NBTHK Juyo Token Shinsa in 1991, under the attribution "Mumei (Yamato Shizu)." Yamato Shizu refers to works made by Shizu Saburo Kaneuji while he was still residing in Yamato Province, before moving to Shizu in Mino Province, as well as works by members of his school who remained in Yamato. These works date from the late Kamakura to the Nanbokucho period. This sword features a high shinogi ridge and a wide shinogi-ji. The jihada displays flowing itame-hada, while the hamon consists of sugu-notare mixed with gunome and irregular patterns, with occasional areas of nijuba (double temper lines). The boshi is yakizume-like, with only a very slight turnback. As the blade shows no distinctive characteristics of the Mino tradition, the attribution to Yamato Shizu is entirely convincing. |
