| This blade, signed “Ujifusa,” is attributed to Wakasa no Kami Ujifusa based on the style of the signature and workmanship. Wakasa no Kami Ujifusa was born in Gifu, Mino Province, in Tenbun 3 (1534), as the third son of Seki Zensai Kanefusa. He soon moved to Seki and, in Eiroku 13 (1570), changed his name from Kanefusa to Ujifusa and received the honorary title Wakasa no Kami. He was retained by Oda Nobunaga and, as a swordsmith serving the Oda family, forged swords in Seki, Gifu, Azuchi, and Kiyosu. He died in Tensho 18 (1590) at the age of 57. This imposing katana originally measured over 2 shaku 4 sun in blade length. It was shortened by slightly more than 1 sun 2 bu (approximately 3.8 cm), presumably to improve its handling, yet it still retains a powerful and magnificent appearance. The large two-character signature “Ujifusa” is characteristic of Wakasa no Kami Ujifusa. The blade is accompanied by a fitting uchigatana koshirae with a dark brown shuro-nuri lacquered saya. This blade passed the NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Token Shinsa in March 2026. |
