| This blade is signed “Minamoto Morimitsu, resident of Higo Province” and dated “January, Shōwa Kinoto-Ushi Year” (1985). It is an impressive sword with a blade length of 73.2 cm (2 shaku 4 sun 1 bu) and a sori of 1.8 cm.Minamoto Morimitsu was born in 1910 and worked in Minamata City, Kumamoto Prefecture. In 1939 he became a student of Kongōbyōe Moritaka Yasuhiro. From 1942 he produced military swords for officers at the Kokura Army Arsenal, and he received numerous awards at the Shinsaku Meitō exhibitions.The nakago-jiri shows the characteristic sotoba-style shape associated with the Kongōbyōe tradition. Made when Morimitsu was 75 years old, this sword displays the confidence, maturity, and powerful spirit of the smith’s later years and can be regarded as one of his outstanding works. |
