| This katana, Minamoto no Naoyoshi [源直吉], was a retainer of the Yamanobe family, senior vassals of the Mito domain, and a disciple of Taikei Naotane [大慶直胤]. Naoyoshi served Yamanobe Yoshimi [山野辺義観], a chif retainer of the Mito domain and the first lord of Sukegawa Kaibō Castle (built in 1836 by Tokugawa Nariaki [徳川斉昭] to guard against foreign ships in Sukegawa, present-day Hitachi City). Naotane had a special relationship with the Yamanobe family and he visited Sukegawa Castle three times—in 1839, 1851, and 1855—to stay and instruct the sword forging skills. Other Naotane-disciples include Ōe Katsunaga [大江勝永], Zenjo Chikanori [善定近則], Naoe Suketoshi [直江助俊], and Shinkei Tanemitsu [心慶胤光]. This katana features a Kijimomo shaped nakago and sound kitae and hamon, forged by Minamoto Naoyoshi in 1859 (Ansei 6). It has passed the Tokubetsu Hozon Token shisna in 1999. |
