| This Kazusa no Suke Kaneshige [上総介兼重] katana comes with a Navy Officer's Sword koshirae/Mounting (Black Leather saya/Scabbard). While the orijinal blade was a modern one made of chrome-plated iron in the Kogaramaru style, this blade is a real Japanese sword made in Edo period, high-ranking swordsmith, Kaneshige. It must have been carried by a distinguished military officer. Kazusa no Suke Kaneshige, the son of the first Kaneshige (Izumi no Kami Kaneshige [和泉守兼重]), created the blade in collaboration with the third Yasutsugu [三代康継] and Hojoji Masateru [法成寺正照]. Its sharp edge resembles that of Kotetsu [虎徹], said to be his fellow disciple. This katana is an excellent example of a ko-itame forged sword with thick ji-nie and kaku/angular-gunome hamon/temper. It has been suriage/shortened to about 2 cm and placed in a naval officer's sword mounting, a wartime legacy. A rare item that deserves to be passed down to future generations. It passed the Tokubetsu Hozon Token shinsa in March 2025. |
